Preparation for a Lifetime of Learning
| Philomath Montessori
enjoys a small school atmosphere that only a classroom of 25 students
can offer |
Within a structured
Montessori environment, each child chooses activities and lessons
that appeal to them and then work at their own pace. |
Our 3-year curriculum includes
a variety of activities in language, geography, history, science,
music, art, and math. |
We offer an individual-based
program that is concerned with the total development of the child
-- social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual. |
Our classroom is alive
with social interactions through which the children learn important
socialization skills. |
With
three staff members, each child receives truly individual attention
and instruction.
- The stability of the faculty, who founded the school eighteen years
ago and still run the school, enhances the children's educational experience.
The faces are always familiar, and communication with parents is immediate
and direct.
- Children learn how to learn and to love learning.

- The child learns to function independently and develops the habit
of initiative. During the school day, they move around freely and interact
with others at will. The wide range of unique Montessori resources in
the classroom creates a place that accommodates many different levels
and interests. Our teachers are trained to link each child with the
materials and activities in the classroom that meet their specific needs.
- Our curriculum includes "sensorial" activities which open
all the children's senses as avenues for learning.
- Painting, weaving, woodworking, scrubbing, polishing, and sewing activities
develop motor skills and are also fun and appealing. Many parents appreciate
this "practical living" component which helps children learn
to take care of themselves and to help out with chores around the house.
Our
classroom is alive with social interactions through which the children
learn important socialization skills.
- They meet and talk with one another and learn to discuss common problems,
resolve conflicts, answer questions, borrow and lend, and assist each
other in many ways. Our "grace and courtesy" lessons help
them with the specifics of manners. Every child is respected by peers,
creating a positive self-concept. Older children learn the value of
helping the little ones.
- Our outdoor area and gardens complement the classroom.
- They invite the children to run, climb, explore, and play. The children
also learn to garden and to build. Always supervised, many important
social lessons are learned there as well.
- Customs and holidays of other cultures are explored through many paths.
- We help the children to develop a broad knowledge and a respect for
the earth and its inhabitants giving them a strong foundation for spiritual
growth and tolerance.
